Kolizej is dead, long live New Kolizej

Multifunctional building with a concert and opera hall is not to be built prior to 2015.
They have started pulling down Kolizej yesterday; thus it will remain like this for the next three weeks.
I

t grew on the abandoned gravel pit in 1847 according to the idea of an Austrian architect Josef Benedikt Withalm: it was first intended to be an accommodation for 3 thousand Austro Hungarian soldiers, dances were held there, musical events, celebrations, people used to gather in a pub and a restaurant. Due to numerous events, it became the biggest entertainment building in Ljubljana.

Soon it was renovated because of the fire and it became a base for smaller companies and tradesmen. Round 1890 they managed to transform into apartment building and it remained like this until 8 years ago when it became a shelter for drug addicts, homeless, and illegal immigrants.

They have started pulling it down in order to build a multifunctional building, a concert-opera hall called Musica. The entire investment is 142, 5 million EUR worth, out of which 60 million is planed for a concert hall within frame of public private partnership.

Even though the predictions were to open the doors of the Hall in the summer of 2012, the deadline was moved – it is not to happen before 2015
